The good web design must follow strictly the general design rules. Each improvement in your web site must be integrated in correspondence with the general design rules; otherwise the lack of compatibility of visual part and functionality will lead to bad results of using your web page and its acceptance in the web space.

01.    Nonstandard elements in the users’ interface

When the users must use nonstandard navigation bar they miss some opportunities.  Even if you develop incredible interface components, which saturate the standard analogs of Apple and Microsoft, it is recommended to use the default ones.

02.    Inconsistent design

The consecutive build design is quite important. The clear distinguished design parts are significant for the quick orientation. . Use identical colors and styles, fonts. Avoid using 20 different styles for buttons in1 web site or 10 different fonts.

Not always the new design trends are applicable for each type of business identity and web site. When you develop a new web page don’t research the trends for web design, but research the competition web pages and the related businesses in order to create knowledge for the brand.

04.    Design before content

The leading part of a web site is the content. Don’t adapt the content into the design and don’t put content into the design as a secondary action. Each design element must exist only if it improves the content.

05.     Requirements for certain versions

The requirement for an exact or minimal version is still existing – some web sites are quoting a browser or plug-in.   Sometimes this is unavoidable, but if you put such warnings on your site, don’t miss to change them when new version become available.

Using inappropriate technologies is confusing the users. For example flash sites that look like HTML sites. The pages look alike, but the functionality is different.

A solution in such cases is to use Flash elements for certain components and HTML for the rest.

If the user has to open the “about us” section to find out who are you, the site is not constructed correctly. The users must be aware of your products and services with the first entering of the home page. It is good to show the general company activities upfront.

08.    Neglecting others’ opinion

If you want your site to answer your customers’ needs, it is good to listen to their opinion. In this way you will be sure that the offered solutions are the right ones for them. The clients know the products better than you and their answers will lead you to correct direction.

09.    Not enough flexible CSS presentation

Designers usually fix margins and fill paddings in CSS, without a real need of that. If the tags div are moving, everything is fix, the wight and all fields are fasten, there is no space for breathing and the formatting is changing order in Internet Explorer 6.

The formatting is delicate, which could destroy the whole form.

10.    Visual sense before users’ experience

Important is the harmony between the visual part and the easy use of an Internet site.

One type typography, small number of used colors, few accents, easy navigation. Create rules, which will build the site and follow them.
